The Beetle is equipped with an anti-theft radio. Special tools are required to remove the radio (see tips). When the radio is removed using the below steps, you will need the activation code to re-activate the radio when it is re-installed.

Step 1

Insert the grip hook key (see tips) with the letter marked "L" in the slot on the left side of the radio.

Step 2

Insert the grip hook key marked with the letter "R" in the slot on the right side of the radio.

Step 3

Make sure that the grip hook keys are firmly seated in the slots of the radio.

Step 4

Using the forefingers, pull the grip hook keys forward toward your body.

Step 5

Remove the power connectors and radio antenna from the back of the radio.

Step 6

With the radio removed, check the connector for bent pins before re-installing the radio in the dash console.

Step 7

To remove the grip hook keys from their slots, insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or paper clip in the release tab on back of radio.

Step 8

Remove the grip hook key from its slot.

Step 9

Reinstall the radio or a replacement in the dash console reversing the steps from which it was removed.

Tips

  • A replica of the grip hook keys that VW technicians use at their work place can be ordered from automotive and auto parts websites. The kit that was used for this project was ordered on the Internet.
  • The grip hook keys are easily identified as each key is marked with the letter "L" or "R".
  • The Beetle uses two (2) grip hook keys to remove radio.
  • Some VWs use four (4) grip hook keys to remove the radio.
  • The activation code is needed to re-activate the radio when reinstalled.
  • The activation code is listed in the owner's manual.

Warnings

  • Disconnecting the negative cable of the battery can cause driveability problems that may require a scan tool to remedy.
  • It is recommended that a battery-powered memory keeper device be placed in the center console accessory socket. The memory keeper will retain important computer settings once the cable is removed.

Things You'll Need

  • Two (2) grip hook keys
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Activation code
  • Memory keeper
  • Paper clip (optional)
