To be safe on a climbing wall, you must wear a harness. More importantly, you must wear it correctly.

Step 1

Take harness and hold loop at front.

Step 2

Put your feet through the two big loops. These loop around to the back of the harness.

Step 3

Pull up to waist.

Step 4

Make sure nothing is twisted.

Step 5

Tighten and double back the buckle on the belt around the waist. This is the most important safety step. Always double and triple check that the waist belt is doubled back before beginning to climb.

Step 6

Tighten buckles on leg belts. If applicable double back the leg belts.

Step 7

Make sure they are tight by pulling them. If there is a gap between you and them, you must tighten them more.

Step 8

If the end of the buckles are too long, you must tuck them in. Take the end of the belt and tuck it into the belt around your leg.

Step 9

Check that everything is tight and safe. Double and triple check that all connections are doubled back through the belt loops.

Step 10

Pull everything tight.

Tips

  • It is important to check that everything is safe before you start to climb.
  • If you are not sure about something, then check with an instuctor.
  • A climbing wall is a dangerous place, so behave well.
  • Do not attempt to climb a wall unless you are experienced or there is an instructor there.

Warnings

  • Not all climbing harnesses are the same. Make sure the one that you are using is safely placed on you before climbing.
  • Climbing improperly is extremely dangerous. Do not use these instructions or any written instructions as your sole guide and teacher. Seek the advice of a trained professional, as a simple mistake can be fatal.
  • Make sure that you have checked your own harness, your belayer's harness, your anchor, the rope and any other possible point of failure before you leave that ground. If you are not experienced enough to know what you should be looking for, find someone who is.
