In today's world, one of the many threats people face are others who wish to cause us fatal harm. Whether or not you think this will never happen to you, you still should know what to do if the case ever arises.

Step 1

Be aware of who you talk to You never know who could cause you fatal harm, so you need to be careful of the strangers you talk to. Don't give out personal information to someone you just met, especially don't post it where the public can access it, like a personal blog or a Myspace profile.

Step 2

Know your surroundings Be aware of the people around you and the environment. If you know someone is following you or you have a "strange feeling", go to an area with many people or go to a local security/police station.

Step 3

Lock up Make sure to lock your doors and windows at night. When you go out, make sure your vehicle's doors and windows are also locked.

Step 4

Let someone know where you are or where you're going Especially for teenagers and young children, always let your parent or guardian know where you are.

Step 5

Have some type of protection and an escape route in your home If someone does enter your home, make sure you have something that can protect you and a place to hide or escape from your home. Having a heavy object, like a baseball bat, can provide good protection if someone does break in.

Tips

  • Educate your children and family members. Teach them how to use emergency numbers and ways they can protect themselves.
  • Extra protection such as a security alarm in your house or car, is very helpful.
  • Note any unusual changes in people you know and people who are close to you.

Warnings

  • If you want protection in your home, it's best not to have a gun if you have children in the house.
  • Don't let anyone know your protection or escape route in your house. The potential attacker could think ahead and prevent you from escaping or protecting yourself.
  • If you hear someone threaten another person's life, tell someone immediately.
