Any idea why you should starch your patchwork fabric before working with it? Simple! It makes it a lost easier to work with, especially for miniature quilts and quilts that have many pieces cut on the bias. Here are some straightforward steps to preparing your patchwork fabric so that it's ready to sew!

Step 1  

Hand wash the quilt fabric in pure soap. This will ensure that no harm comes to the print or fabric type, as pure soap is gentle on fabric.

Step 2  

Starch the fabric. Not only does this step make the fabric easier to work with but it will also ensure that the fabric doesn't stretch out of shape as you work with it and it makes it easier to fit the pieces together.

Step 3  

Use your freshly laundered and starched patchwork fabric to quilt up a storm.

Tips

  • Be sure to check that the fabric can handle being starched. Some more delicate fabrics might need simple wishing and holding a steam iron above them (not actual pressing). Know your fabric strengths and weaknesses in advance!
