There are many reasons and a few ways to point at something that you want to show to someone. We use our pointer finger, which is aptly titled, to point to the cloud in the sky, or a bird in a tree. How many times, as a child has your mother told you to never point at a person, as it was rude. Well it is still rude, and it is not polite to point to a person, but there other things that still need to be pointed out to someone else.

Step 1

Make a partial fist of your right or left hand, depending on which one you write with.

Step 2

Extend the pointer finger toward the object that you want to discuss or reference. Look at that same place with your eyes.

Step 3

Explain to the person you are with, the reason you have for pointing it out, and put your hand down.

Step 4

Remember that pointing with your eyes and a nod of your head is a most discreet form of pointing. Usually this method is used so that no one can see you talking about what you are pointing out. Most of the time you will be pointing to or discussing another person at a distance.

Warnings

  • In some countries, pointing is considered extremely disrespectful. Be aware if your community looks down upon pointing.
  • Never point with your middle finger. Stick to your pointer finger, since that's what it's for; pointing. Putting up a middle finger is considered very offensive and can get you in trouble.
