The object of Risk is to conquer the world by controlling every territory. Since you can't take over the world in real life, why not do it in a board game?

Step 1  

Set up the game. Bring out the board, gather some friends, and choose your color. Find a table of numbers on the board and place them on the lowest number, which will usually be four.

 

Step 2  

Set up your initial territories. There are two ways you can do this:  

  • Have each player roll a die. The player that rolled the highest value will choose an open territory (one without anyone in it) and place one soldier in it. A player next to that player will then choose another open territory and place one soldier in it, the player next to him or her will choose another open territory and place one soldier in it, and so on and so forth. Continue taking turns until each territory is occupied.
  • Deal out territory cards. Place one piece in each territory.

Step 3  

Receive reinforcements at the beginning of each turn. You get one soldier for every three territories you own, with a minimum of three reinforcements per turn. In addition to this, whenever you own all the territories of a continent, you get additional soldiers based off the following list:  

  • Africa: 3
  • Asia: 7
  • Australia: 2
  • Europe: 5
  • North America: 5
  • South America: 2

Step 4  

Attack players. You must have at least two people in your territory to attack. To attack other players:  

  1. Declare you are going to attack a territory adjacent to a territory you control, as well as the territory you are attacking from. For example, "I'm attacking Eastern America from Western America." (red dices are the attackers, and white dices are the defender's)
  2. Roll the same amount of red dice as soldiers you want to attack with, with a maximum of three. Keep in mind that this only means you can only roll with three die; it doesn't mean you can't invade with more than three soldiers. Also remember that you must keep at least one soldier in any of your territories.
  3. Have the defending player roll the same amount of white dice as the number of troops in their defending territory, with a maximum of two.
  4. Match up the highest red die with the highest white die, and match the second highest red die with the second highest white die. If there is only one white die, only match up the highest red die with the white die.
  5. Remove one of your pieces from the attacking territory if the white die is higher or equal to its corresponding red die.
  6. Remove one of your opponents pieces from the defending territory if the red die is higher to its corresponding white die.
  7. You may attack any number of times from any one of your countries to any adjacent country
  8. If you take over at least one country you may have one card at the end of your turn, you can only get one card maximum at the end of your turn.

Step 5  

Move pieces to different territories at the end of your turn. You can move pieces anywhere, as long as the starting point and destination can be reached by going through a string of adjacent territories under your control.

Step 6  

Turn in cards when you have a three of a kind or all three. This will get you reinforcements at the beginning of your turn. The amount will depend on where the golden horse is that you placed at the beginning of the game. The number where the horse is will tell you how many pieces you receive. you can only turn in a card before you begin your turn.

Tips

  • On most game boards, the different continents will be distinguished by different colors.
  • Australia is a very good place to control; in all, it will give you two extra reinforcements per turn (if you include the four extra territories it gives you), and it can only be accessed by one territory.
  • There are different methods of playing, and this is only one. There are a few other variations, including one where you choose a capital and have to defend it, and another where you are given a mission card and have to carry it out.
  • Once you have five cards, you are required to turn them in. This is to prevent people from hoarding cards until the benefits become a lot better.
  • Cannons represent ten soldiers, and horses represent five soldiers.
  • One cool thing you can do is make your own board.
    1. find some thing you want as a map (a country or even your house)
    2. print or draw it on SEVERAL sheets of paper
    3. draw lines to represent countries
    4. decide what are continents and what are their bonuses
    5. Optional, write down on a seperate sheet to decide what country can attack what country, that way you can have over see attacks and even one way attacks borders.
    6. tape the sheets together and preferably to a piece of cardboard or wood.
  • CONGRATS YOU HAVE A NEW GAME BOARD!!!

Warnings

  • Asia may seem tempting to control because of its reinforcements, but since it's so large, it's hard to control.
  • While having few borders makes a location easier to defend, it will also make it harder for you to expand from there.
