Ever wanted your Pokémon to have an egg, or have two of the same Pokémon? You can do just that by using the daycare to get a baby Pokemon!
Ditto Method
(This method is best for when the Pokémon you want a baby of is male.)
- Make sure that the game you have has a daycare. In Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, it's to the left of Mauville. There is an old man standing outside between a fence. In FireRed/LeafGreen, it is in Four Island (you must have beaten the Elite Four). In Pokemon Diamond/Pearl, that daycare is in Solaceon town.
- Obtain a Ditto. This Pokémon is the best Pokemon for battling and mating, so get one. In Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, you need to have beaten the Elite Four. Go to the Fossil Maniac's house, and go the the newly-dug hole. You'll find plenty of Ditto there, so bring Poké Balls. In FireRed/LeafGreen, go to the abandoned mansion on Cinnabar Island and go down to the basement floor. You can find Ditto there. In Diamond/Pearl, you can find a ditto on route 218 with the Poke Radar. In Platinum, you can find ditto in the Trophy Garden after beating the Elite Four.
- Put the Ditto in the Day Care. Then, put the Pokémon who you want the baby form of. Beware, it will turn out to be the first form of the Pokémon (ex. Jolteon and Ditto will produce an Eevee).
- Go wait for the Pokémon to lay an egg. This can take anywhere from a few steps to thousands of them. Find some way to pass the time.
Alternate Method
(This method is best for when the Pokémon you want a baby of is female. It won't work for Eevee in Diamond or pearl, they will mostly be boys.)
- In this method, you do not need a Ditto, but you do need to have two Pokémon of the same egg group (you can find this information on any good Pokémon fansite) and of opposite genders. The Pokémon you want the baby off must be female.
- Place both Pokémon in the Daycare center.
- Go wait for the Pokémon to lay an egg. This can take anywhere from a few steps to thousands of them. Find some way to pass the time by running, walking, or biking.
Hatching the Egg
- Congratulations! You have your first egg! Eggs take care, just like Pokémon. But you cannot trade an egg, or battle with it (except in Diamond/Pearl where both of these are possible). In order to hatch an egg, you must carry it around in your party. Leaving your Game Boy on for hours won't make it work. You must walk, run, or bike. Some eggs take about 1000 steps, others take about 10,000. Most Pokémon need 5210 steps. One of the best ways to do this is to take a "world tour" on your game and go around the map. For instance, in Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, you could go from Petalburg to Dewford to Slateport to Mauville to Fallarbor to Rustboro, then repeat, among other routes. You can also run back and forth on the route between Mauville and Verdanturf. If you've beaten the Elite Four, you could even go legendary hunting if you haven't done so already. if boredom is not an issue, then going up and down the cycling road can be an effective way to hatch eggs
Stages
- The first stage is "What will hatch from this? It will take some time." This is perhaps the longest stage.
- The second stage is the fastest. It says that it will hatch soon.
- The third stage is the last. Keep running! An "Oh?" will appear on the screen, and you will stop running. The egg will hatch!
- You cannot stop the egg from hatching after the screen has showed you the "Oh?".
Tips
- The father Pokémon can pass on TMs and HMs. If using the alternate method, the Pokémon hatched from the egg will be the mother Pokémon's type. You can use the alternate method to breed "egg moves" onto Pokémon, such as an Eevee with Wish.
- If you are trying to find a good nature and you are making lots of eggs, make a separate box name named(insert Pokemon name here)eggs.
- If you have a Pokémon that has the ability Magma Armor or Flame Body (usually Slugma/Magcargo) in your party then the amount of steps needed to hatch is halved, if the game is Emerald, Diamond, Pearl, or Platinum.
- If you are playing this on a emulator, then you should maximize the frameskip speed and walk to and fro like mad and will soon have your egg hatched.
Warnings
- If the old man says that the two prefer to play with other Pokemon more than each other, they won't make an egg.
- Check back often to the daycare so you won't have to pay to much! If they don't gain a level, it will cost you 100 Poké Dollars. Remember to take them out of Day Care!
- If you are trying to mass produce a Pokémon (to find one with a good nature or something) It can be VERY boring hatching them.
- Remember legendary Pokemon cannot breed.
