How to make food for a guinea pig instead of buying it. This way, you can decide for yourself what your pet will get in which quantities.

Step 1 Mix the following ingredients together:

  • 10 cups (2.5 L) alfalfa pellets (for young, growing and pregnant cavies) or a timothy based pellet (for adults) - formulated with Vitamin C (adults only eat 8oz. a day)

Tips

  • Please don't overdo any of the ingredients.
  • Be sure to give your guinea pig some appropriate hay along with this mix.
  • Always buy the greenest hay because it means that it is fresher.
  • Do not let your pig stay in the cage for a long time. like people they also want to be taken outside and be played with. Be wary of prey animals such as cats, dogs, hawks etc. Do not allow your Guinea Pig to be outside for long periods of time, or unsupervised.
  • Most Experts these days do not agree with the feeding of grains or any type of seeds, as Guinea Pigs digestive systems do not digest this type of feed well. Avoid any guinea pig foods sold with these ingredients. They do not have your pet's best interest at heart.
  • Do not feed fruits or some sugar laden vegs. ( such as carrots) they should be given sparingly as treats. They can cause bladder and urinary stones and are not good either.
  • Make sure piggie has water at all times!

Warnings

  • Please check with your guinea pig's vet to make sure it can eat this mix.
  • Only feed alfalfa hay to guinea pigs under 6 months of age.
  • Do not let your guinea pig eat daffodils, mice, Wesley tulips or lily of the valley - they are poisonous.

Things You'll Need

  • Alfalfa pellets/timothy pellets
  • Fresh veggies such as romaine lettuce and other leafy greens.
  • A good web site or informational book that is current and has been updated regularly.
