Apple sauce can be a great treat that you can make a home! Here's a sweet snack with simple instructions.

Ingredients

  • approx. 6 Granny Smith apples
  • ¾ cup sugar (or to taste)

Step 1

Peel and core six apples. It is best to pick two large, two small, and two medium sized apples. Use a knife or an apple or potato peeler. Use a knife or an apple corer to core the apple.

Step 2

Cut up the apples. Cut them into eighths, then cut each eighth into three pieces. The chunks do not have to be the same size or shape as all of them will be boiled down anyway.

Step 3

Put the apples in a large pot. Choose a pot that is large enough to hold the apples in the bottom half. You don't want the apples reaching the top of the pot. If you want to add sugar.

Step 4

Let them cook. Cover the pot and allow it to cook on low heat for 20 minutes and then mash with potato masher for those who like the chunks if you don't you should let it boil until it has the consistency of puree. If you want it that way you should make sure that there are no chunks or large pieces left.

Step 5 Stir and allow to cool. Serve when cool.

Tips

  • You may decide that the sauce may be too sour you can add a bit of sugar for the sweeter taste.
  • Hey did you know instead of using oil in a cake you can substitute the oil with applesauce.
  • If you want small chunks use a round masher for the bigger chunks use the square looking one.

Warnings

  • The apples will be hot after cooking. Let them cool before eating.
  • Watch out for hungry kids that can bite.

Things You'll Need

  • large pot
  • apple corer (optional)
  • knife (optional - if you have an apple corer and a potato peeler)
  • potato peeler (optional)
  • potato masher (optional)
