Beach bags have many uses - they are great for toting beach gear, for holding a sweater and purse when going to the movies, or for packing sandwiches and snacks for a trip to the park.

Save money by making them yourself, using old jersey shirts that were headed for the trash. They are quick and easy to make, so you can have as many as you'd like, maybe one color for every day of the week!

Step 1

Clean out those dresser drawers. Gather the old jersey shirts that are squeezed in the back because they no longer are in style. They are no longer junk! They have just become the first step in creating your very own beach bag!

Step 2 Place the shirt flat on a table or cutting board

Flatten it with your hands or do a quick iron. Cut off the arms and neck. Set them aside.

Step 3

Turn the shirt inside out. By using a small back stitch, or sewing machine, stitch it along the cut edge. The bottom edge will become the opening of the bag.

  • Search through the underwear drawers, and look for washed-out t-shirts that the guys love to save. Cut two 18"x1" strips and sew them to be used as handles that are attached to the opening of the bag itself. Repeat this step for each side of the bag.

Step 4 Flip the bag inside out, with the right side showing

Your beach bag is ready to be used!

Tips

  • This bag comes with airholes in the fabric, which makes it perfect for airing out your wet beach towel.
  • Make one for every jersey and t-shirt hanging around, and hold a garage sale.
  • You can also cut and tie the bottom of the bag for a more fashionable approach with old patterned t-shirts.

Things You'll Need

  • Football, baseball or any type of jersey
  • Old t-shirt for handle
  • Needle and thread, pins
  • Fabric scissors
