Google's Picasa 2 is a free program that helps you quickly locate, organize, edit, and share every single picture on your Windows PC. When you open the Picasa program it automatically searches your hard drive for pictures and sorts them by date into collections and folders. You can import pictures from a variety of media including cameras, media cards, CDs, or a scanner.

Step 1

Start the Picasa program. You can download it at http://google.picasa.com if you don't already have it on your computer.

Step 2

Connect the device or drive containing the pictures you want to import.

Step 3

Click on the Import button.

Step 4

Select a device from the Select Device dropdown menu. The preview window will display all pictures found on the device or drive.

Step 5

Click on the Finish button.

Step 6

In the Title field of the Finish Importing dialog box, type a name for the folder where the pictures will be stored.

Step 7

In the Date field of the Finish Importing dialog box, choose the date the pictures were taken (if necessary).

Step 8

In the Place Taken field of the Finish Importing dialog box, type the name of the place where the pictures were taken (optional).

Step 9

In the Folder Caption field of the Finish Importing dialog box, type a caption for the folder (optional).

Step 10

Click Finish to complete the import.

Step 11

Start editing!

Step 12

Tips

  • To exclude pictures from being imported, select the pictures in the preview screen before importing and click on the Exclude button.
  • To exclude duplicates from being imported, click in the Exclude Duplicates checkbox.
  • Adding descriptive text in the Place Taken and Folder Caption fields of the Finish Importing dialog box can prove beneficial later if you are ever searching for a particular group of pictures.

Warnings

  • The Finish Importing dialog box has an option that will allow you to Delete original picture(s) from source when import is complete. If you choose this option, ALL pictures on the device or drive you are importing from (even those you marked as excluded from the import) will be permanently deleted. This is one feature that you might not want to take advantage of.
