Have you ever received a dollar bill as change and did not want to use it? Fold it into a heart and keep it in your wallet or give it to a friend. A $20 bill can be used instead to make a cute gift. Click on any photo for a closer look.

Step 1

Start with a dollar bill (or $5, $10, $20, etc) and fold the bottom right corner diagonally.

Step 2

Unfold the corner, and then fold the top right corner diagonally.

Step 3

Unfold the corner and you should see that the creases form an X. Fold the right side of the bill backwards over the middle of the X.

Step 4

Unfold it. Push the middle creases in and let the corners collapse down.

Step 5

Repeat with the left side.

Step 6

Fold the whole bill in half. Then unfold.

Step 7

Pinch the middle section along the crease you made in the previous step, bring the edges of each triangle together. This will create a rectangular flap in the back. Flatten it to the right, as shown.

Step 8

Flip the bill over.

Step 9

Fold the top flap down, and tuck the corners in.

  • Hint: at this point you should have a single pair of tabs, folded on the diagonal, pointing up. You should have three layers of folded tabs pointing down.
  • Still not sure? Start with a $1 bill and follow the markings on the bill to show you the correct orientation.

Step 10

Flip the bill over.

Step 11

Fold the bottom right corner to the middle.

Step 12

Unfold and flatten the corner down.

Step 13

Fold the bottom corner towards the middle crease.

Step 14

Unfold and flatten the corner down.

Step 15

Repeat with other corner.

Step 16

Repeat with the other three points.

Step 17

Fold the right and left corners back.

Step 18

Insert a quarter in the middle if desired.

Tips

  • Best if done on a flat surface.
  • If you don't have any U.S. currency, you'd like a different color, or you want to give one to someone without giving them your money, start with a rectangular piece of paper about the same size: 6.6cm (2.61 inches) wide, by 15.6cm (6.14 inches) long. A paper cutter, if you have access to one, can help you get the edges square.

Warnings

  • Take care with the bill to avoid ripping it.
  • do not do this to all your money. Often times, vending machines will not take dollar bills that have been folded so many times

This is the best tutorial I have seen on folding a dollar bill into a heart. I only wish that this form of instruction would be carried out to all the other money folding items. It was at the right speed, visible, and clearly defined. Congratulations! You are a winner when it comes to teachers. Thank you, thank you very much!
