The Fishtail braid, also known as the Herringbone or Fishbone, looks elaborate and time-consuming. But it's actually fun and easy to do!
Step 1
Start with clean, well-combed hair. It may be easier to braid if your hair is slightly damp.
Step 2
Put your hair up in a ponytail if you wish.
Step 3
Divide the ponytail into two sections.
Step 4

Pull a skinny strand of hair from the outside of the left section, and add it to the right side. Pull it tight.
Step 5

Do the same for the right side. Pull a skinny strand of hair out from the outside of the right section, and add it to the left side. Pull it tight.
Step 6

Repeat steps 4-5 until the braid is the desired length.
Step 7

Secure the end of the braid with an elastic band, bow, or hair tie.
Tips
- The skinnier the strand you use, the more intricate the braid will look. In general try to use the same thickness throughout or your braid will look uneven.
- You can use bobby pins to secure flyaways.
Warnings
- Never use standard office rubber bands in your hair; they will damage your hair.
