Many tourists flock all over Oahu to see, interact, and enjoy the island. One of the most famous places on the island is the North Shore. Turtle Bay Hilton Resort and Pipeline Beach are recommended places to go to. This article will explain how to get to and drive to North Shore.

From the East side

  1. Find Kahekili Highway (Route 83) in Kaneohe. Take this all the way north. Just after you get out of Temple Valley (Valley of the Temples), you'll merge with Kamehameha Highway (Route 183). The road will now become Kamehameha Highway (Route 83). You'll be taking this road all the way north until you get to North Shore.

From the West side

  1. Get onto the H-1 West. The H-1 connects from Waikiki all the way to Aiea.
  2. Travel north towards Pearlridge Shopping Center. You'll want to follow any Aiea/Pearlridge signs.
  3. Continue until you get to Wal-Mart & Sam's Club (on your right). You'll then see signs to go towards Mililani/Wahiawa, Waipahu, etc. Drive onto the onramp of Kamehameha Highway (Highway 99).
  4. Drive through Mililani, and pass by Schofield Barracks & Wahiawa. Around Haleiwa, Kamehameha Highway will turn into Highway 83.
  5. Continue on this road and just after Sunset Beach Park, you'll be around North Shore area.

From the South side

  1. Get onto Kalanianaole Highway (Highway 72) on either side, whether you're on the West or East side.
    • If you're on the East side, follow Hwy. 72 through Waimanalo and to the intersection of Kalanianaole Highway and Kailua Road. Turn left and merge off right onto Kamehameha Highway. Just follow this path all the way north.
    • If you're on the West side, follow Hwy. 72 through Hawaii Kai and into Waikiki. Jump onto the H-1 West and follow the directions for the West part.

Tips

  • If you are coming from the East side, from Kaneohe to the North Shore, expect your trip to be at least 3 1/2 to 4 hours, depending on traffic. Between the two cities/towns, Kamehameha Highway is the only road access.
  • Avoid the H-1 West anytime between 3 and 5 pm. From Honolulu to Schofield Barracks, traffic can be up to 2 hours with afternoon rush hour. Traffic isn't a problem until you get to the Wal-Mart/freeway divider.
  • Always carry a map with you when asking for directions. Locals and residents rarely go by highway numbers, as most people use the actual road and highway names, for example Kamehameha Highway instead of Highway 83.

Warnings

  • Please be aware of people crossing the road along the North Shore area. Because of the beaches like Pipeline, there isn't a parking lot. People park along the beach highway side and the mountain side, so there's a constant flow of road crossers.
