Whether you're going to a costume party or changing your style, looking like a hippie isn't really all that hard. After all, one of the tenets of being a hippie is that natural is beautiful, and your clothes are a chance to express yourself, not enhance yourself.

Step 1

Shop at thrift stores and flea markets. You can also find hippie gear in other places, like New Age stores and eBay, but hippies generally favor used clothing purchased locally. Many hippies are into sewing and other handcrafts; if you can make your own clothes, that's even better.

Step 2

Get a loose, comfortable top. Tie dye, dashikis, and peasant blouses are popular choices among hippies. If you're a woman, wear a soft, cotton bra (no underwire or padding) or don't wear a bra at all.

Step 3

Put a vest on over your top. It should be made out of a natural material like leather, wool, or cotton. Hemp is ideal.

Step 4

Find a pair of bell bottoms. Denim, corduroy, or any material will work, as long as it has that characteristically hippie flair at the bottom. Having trouble finding bell bottoms in this age of the skinny jeans? Here's How to Turn a Pair of Jeans into Bell Bottoms.

  • If you're a woman (or even if you're a guy, since hippies are nonconformists, after all) you can wear a loose, flowy skirt (think gypsy style) or a dress (tunics, sundresses).

Step 5

Wear sandals or go barefoot.

  • The sandals most often associated with hippies are Birkenstocks.
  • In colder weather, suede shoes or boots or moccasin-style shoes will work.

Step 6

Put on lots of handcrafted jewelry. Bonus hippie points if you make your own. See our articles on making jewelry.

  • long beaded necklaces and macrame
  • natural stones
  • seashells
  • peace charms
  • large, ethnic-inspired earrings
  • hemp

Step 7

Leave your hair long, loose and low-maintenance. Don't put any chemicals in it. The less you style it, the better.

  • If you do need to tie your hair up, put it in a low ponytail or a braid.
  • Wear a headband across your forehead.
  • Wear flowers, flower-inspired accessories, and/or feathers in your hair.
  • Dreadlocks are also an option.

Step 8

Embroider brightly colored flowers, stars, birds, marijuana leaves, and slogans like "love" and "joy" on your clothes. For festive occasions, decorate yourself with face paint.

Tips

  • Hippies often wear symbols, jewelry, and clothing inspired by Native American, Asian, Indian, African, and Latin American cultures.
  • In general, favor natural fibers like cotton, wool, and leather. Steer clear of synthetics as much as you can.
  • Keep all your grooming natural and unscented. If you wear perfume make it an essential oil such as patchouli, sandalwood, or jasmine.
