Anime girl faces are most known for the huge brilliant eyes and unique hairstyles. The faces are young, sweet, and charming. Learning to draw anime faces will take practice but will increase your artistic skills. Follow these steps to learn to draw an anime girl's face.

Step 1

Place a vertical guideline marking the center of the face.

Step 2

Sketch in a horizontal guideline 3/4 down the vertical line, this is where the eyes will be placed on.

Step 3

Add another horizontal guideline halfway down the vertical line. The eyebrows will go here.

Step 4

Draw a circle starting from the top of the vertical line to the 3/4 horizontal guideline. Start at the end of the vertical line and draw a line a little ways past the 3/4 horizontal line and meet the circle. Make a very rounded triangular shape as the cheeks. Start a little ways past the 3/4 horizontal line and make the rounded triangular shape to the chin.

Step 5

Add in the eyebrows on the halfway horizontal line. They should both be equal width from the vertical line. Add a small sideways triangle as a nose, starting at the 3/4 horizontal line. The mouth should be just below the nose. The mouth should be a slightly curved line. Add a smaller curved line under the mouth to indicate lips. The ears are in between the ½ ways and 3/4 horizontal lines. The ears should be approximately 1cm from the head. The neck should be slightly curved in lines and then curved out as the shoulders. The neck should be placed down from the eyes at the bottom of the head.

Step 6

The eyes should be placed just above the 3/4 horizontal line and just below the eyebrows. This eye will be on the right side of the face. Start by drawing a line that curves upwards that is slightly thicker at the highest point and make the left end of the curved line higher than the right.

Step 7

Draw the lower part of the eye. It should slope down to the right a little, and should be thicker at the right corner.

Step 8

If you finished, draw a long oval within the eye, make part of the oval obscured by the upper part of the eye.

Step 9

Draw the outline of the light glares. The light source is coming from the left side so start by drawing a large oval on the left side of the iris and a small oval on the other side.

Step 10

Next, draw the pupil underneath the light glares. Draw the eyelashes in too. The eyelashes are 2-3 curved spikes coming off the side of the eye towards the outside of the face, Now shade in the rest of the iris its dark at the top but light at the bottom. Now draw the left eye the exact same way as a mirror image.

Step 11

The hair can be long or short. The bangs should be drawn to the top of the eyes to the top of the head, and they should be in clumps in some places and in strands in other parts. For straight bangs make your lines neat and smooth. For built up bangs make the ends pointy and clumps at the side of the head. For long hair in front of the ears add a line that connects to the side of the head and overlapping the ears and straight down cutting off at the end of the neck line. Hair behind the ears should start at the earlobe and cut off at the neck line. Short hair should be in big clumps that end just before the neck line.

Step 12

Erase all guidelines and unwanted lines. Shade the face and outline the character with black ink or colour.

Tips

  • Take a good look at anime characters you like. What makes the styles different of different anime?
  • Practice a lot. Try drawing different styles and, especially, different emotions and attitudes. What makes an expression look glum, embarrassed, scared, shy, and so on? When you get to drawing the characters' bodies, remember that posture can also say a lot about mood.
  • You can make up your own or emulate a drawing of a character you've seen.
  • Anime shading, if you start to get into it, is very bold. Look closely at examples.

Warnings

  • Be careful not to smudge your drawing if you put your arm down.
