Step 1

Measurements to fit chest sizes:

  • 21-21" - size 2-4
  • 25-26 1/2" - size 6-8
  • 28-30" - size 10-12
  • Note: Instructions for sizes 6-8 and 10-12 will be in parentheses.

Step 2

Make two pieces alike. Using a size K hook, Ch 74 (84-94).

Step 3

Row 1: DC in 4th ch from hook, ch 1. Sk next st, *dc in next st, ch 1, sk next st. Rep from * across, ending with dc. Ch 4 (counts as dc and ch 1, now and throughout), and turn.

Step 4

Row 2: *DC in ch 1 sp, and ch 1. Rep from * across, ending with dc. Ch 4 and turn.

Step 5

Rows 3-10(11-12): Rep row 2. Except on last row, do not ch 4 and turn. Ch 2 and turn.

Step 6

Row 11(12-13): * SC in ch 1 sp and ch 1. Rep from * across, ending with sc. Fasten off.

Step 7

Stitch pieces together as shown in the diagram.

  • When stitching these two pieces together, keep the sc row at the top. It's easier to put the right sides together and stitch your seam.
  • As with joining any crocheted fabric, you have a choice of stitching the two pieces with a tapestry needle threaded with the same yarn or working a slip stitch through both edges of the fabric.

Step 8

Make a ch 35"(40-45") long. In second ch from the hook, sl st in each st across. Fasten off.

Step 9

Weave ch in and out of dc and ch 1 sp.

Step 10

After weaving chain, gather the poncho around the chain and tie in a bow.

Step 11

Add fringe. (optional)

Tips

  • Ch=Chain
  • St=Stitch
  • DC=Double Crochet
  • SC=Single Crochet
  • SK=Skip
  • Sl St=Slip Stitch
  • Rep=Repeat
  • Try sewing on some beads or adding them to the fringe for a different look.

Things You'll Need

  • 7 oz. of the yarn of your choice for sizes 2-4
  • 10.5 oz. of yarn for sizes 6-8 and 10-12
  • Size K crochet hook
  • Crochet needle
