Call of Duty is a great combat action game, how could you not want to dominate it? Learning the basics of the game, being familiar with the weapons, and becoming instinctive with the game controls can give you an edge.
Step 1
Begin playing basic Call of Duty by loading the game, entering a username, and starting at Boot Camp. At the boot camp, you will become familiar with the controls of your game, basically, these:
- "w" on the keyboard is walk. You aim you direction of travel with the mouse, by moving in the direction you want to face.
- "c" is crouch, which will help you avoid enemy gunfire, but will not allow you to move as quickly.
- "Ctrl" is prone, which offers the most concealment and weapon accuracy, but your travel will be very slow.
- Left click your mouse to fire the weapon you have selected. Hold the mouse down for fully automatic fire from a full auto weapon, click each time you fire a shot for semi automatic or bolt action weapons, or to throw a grenade.
- Number keys from 1 to 4 select different weapons, 4 being the grenade, 1 and 2 usually are rifles, and 3 is usually a pistol.
- "Shift" is using the "melee" attack, which is used in close quarters to kill the enemy with the gun stock, often when you are out of ammunition and don't have time to reload.
- "r" reloads your weapon. This will not work for every weapon, but does reload fully automatics like the MP-40, the MP-44, and the Thompson Submachine gun.
- "f" is used to pick up ammunition, health, and weapons dropped by fallen soldiers. It is also used to pick up grenades and explosives or other articles you may use in the course of the game.
Step 2
Follow the compass in the lower left corner of the screen to travel to your objectives. You will usually see a gold star in the compass direction you need to travel.
Step 3
Press the "tab" key to see the current mission objectives. This will help you understand your current status, and see if there is anything special you should watch for.
Step 4
Look at the "health indicator" in the lower right corner of your screen. This should be fully green when you have good health, and when the green is almost gone, you may have to divert to look for "health kits". Enemies you kill in combat will often have health and ammunition you can pick up if you approach them closely.
Step 5
Play a level until you have memorized the events as much as possible. If you are killed, analyze your strategy before resuming the game, and try a different approach if needed.
Step 6
Choose weapons you are comfortable with, and have plenty of ammo available. You start a level with certain guns, usually an M1 Garrand and a Thompson Submachine gun, plus 10 grenades and a pistol. If you have an opportunity, you may exchange these during the game, and here are some you may look for:
- MP-40. A full auto German machine gun which holds 30 rounds and is fairly effective in medium and close range fighting. Bullets are readily available when the enemy is fallen in battle.
- MP-44. A full auto German machine gun which holds 32 rounds, somewhat larger and a little more accurate than the MP-40, but ammo is a little less common.
- M1-Garrand. A semiautomatic American rifle which holds 8 rounds and is extremely accurate, even at long ranges.
- Thompson Submachine Gun. An American fully automatic machine gun, usually hold 20 rounds, not very accurate at high rates of fire. This weapon does not seem to have the kill success of the German made machine guns.
- MGs. These are machine guns from any country, in a number of sizes and calibers. Often, they are not "moveable", so you have to shoot from the location you find them.
- Sniper rifles. These have telescopic sights which allow you to shoot any target you can see very accurately. They are usually bolt action single shot rifles, although you may encounter some semiautomatic rifles in some circumstances.
- Grenades. There are 3 types of grenades, the US, German, and Russian fragmenting grenades. In "Call of Duty II" and later, there are also smoke grenades.
- Panzerfausts. These are similar to a bazooka, used to destroy enemy tanks. You will give up one of your rifles when you pick this weapon up, so remember where you get it, to return for you previous gun.
Step 7
Choose weapons you are comfortable with. You will want at least one full or semi automatic rifle, and one long range rifle, either an M1 Garrand or a scoped bolt action sniper rifle, as well as a handgun in the event you run out of ammo for the two rifles.
Step 8
Keep your orientation during battle, so that you know where your objective and the rest of your platoon or allies are located.
Step 9
Look for ammunition and health as you travel the game. You can only carry a limited amount of each, but keep you health as high as possible, and your ammo replenished.
Step 10
Crouch or crawl when heavy fire is directed toward you. Use whatever cover or concealment is available to protect yourself.
Step 11
Use hand grenades when enemy troops are nearby in sufficient numbers to warrant them, or to take out enemy MGs (Machine Guns). "4" is the selector for grenade, and you left click your mouse to throw them. Aim the grenade using the game aiming device, like a cross hair, and for distant targets, aim high to get sufficient range.
Step 12
Right click you mouse to use your gunsights or scope, right click again to drop your weapon. You can fire your weapon in either carrying position, but using the sights is much more accurate.
Step 13
Learn your name in each mission. You play a certain charactor in the action, beginning as a private, and are not called by the name you join the game with.
Step 14
Listen to the Sargent, or platoon leader, and the other charactors. They will give you instructions as you progress, such as pick up Panzerfaust and take out a tank, or go to a certain location.
Step 15
Reload your weapon when you have a lull in action, or you get below 5 or 6 rounds left.
Step 16
After you have mastered a mission as a "greenhorn", move up to "Regular Army" for more challenge, the "Hardened" for the highest skill level. When you successfully complete the game with very few mistakes at the Hardened level, you can dominate the easier levels.
Tips
- Use grenades.
- Take cover.
- Don't always rely on your teammates.
- Tell your team in team speak that an area is secure.
- Remeber when shooting at targets from a distance to lead them slightly.
- Consider buying MOHAA to help you. What MOHAA will do is help because you can't aim down the sight, so if you play it for a while then play Call of Duty it will be easier.
- You can reset the controls if the location of the game keys is confusing or difficult for you.
- These steps and tips are for "Call of Duty", and although the later versions are similar, there are distinct differences.
Warnings
- If all you have is a rifle and see someone with a MG..........Run!
- Don't always follow your team - they could run into a trap taking you down as well.
