Always wanted to learn how to French Braid Someone Else's Hair? Then you have come to the right place!

Step 1

Make sure the hair you are braiding is well brushed and free of tangles. I think you are better off using a day old hair that is well brushed with no tangles. Also, make sure that there is no part in the hair, the hair is at least to the shoulders or collarbone.

Step 2

Begin by separating a portion of hair at the top of the head. Others like to go down at the temple or even the ear, but I think it is best to start at the crown of the head.

Step 3

Divide the crown portion into three even pieces. Hold the right piece in your right hand, while the left piece is held by the left hand. The middle section is held by the left pinkie. Don't wrap your pinkie around the middle piece, just let it lay over you pinkie so you don't lose it.

Step 4

Brace the left section in between the left index finger and middle finger and bring the right section in your thumb, passing over the middle section. This will begin the French braid. Make sure that the middle section is still being supported by the left pinkie.

Step 5

Take a piece just below the crown portion on the RIGHT side and bring it to the piece of hair that is in your left thumb, making it one piece. Then take the middle section with your right and pull it to the right.

Step 6

Drop the hair that was in your left thumb. It should be one chunk, and it's now the biggest piece and also the middle section. Brush aways the lose hair to keep it smooth. Brace what's now the right section in between your right index finger and middle finger. Bring the left section in between your right thumb, passing over what's now the middle section. Note here that you are no longer supporting the middle section with your pinkie.

Step 7

Take a small piece just below the crown portion on the LEFT side, and take it to the hair that is in you right thumb. Then take the middle section, the big chunk, with your left hand a pull it to the left.

Step 8

Drop the hair that was in you right thumb so it lies flat. Make sure no lose hair is attached to any piece of the braid. Bring the hair that is in your right hand into you left thumb. Continue take portions from the below from what you took last. Always make sure that you clear aways the lose hair to keep the braid looking nice, pretty and clean. Once approaching the end, fight the urge to tilt the head forward or else you will end up with a lose, flabby bunch of hair at the bottom.

Step 9

Braid a tail when you come to the nape of the neck. Tie off the end with a hair elastic. If you like, you could to a French bun and tuck the tail under the shaft of the French Braid.

Tips

  • There are many ways to do this, but i find this the best way.
  • Apply some hairspray to the braid once you are done to keep the hair in place.
  • Always brush away lose and static hair.
  • To make the braid nicer, take a piece from the hair elastic and pull it out, making a small loop. Take a piece of unbraided hair, and wind it around the elastic, then pull it through the little elastic loop you were holding.

Warnings

  • Do not pull on the hair very tight. You want it secure, but don't yank.
  • DO NOT use a rubber band to secure hair. You can cause hair breakage and even the scalp to bleed. ALWAYS use a hair elastic.

Things You'll Need

  • Hairbrush
  • Comb
  • Hair elastics
  • Hairspray
  • Patience
  • Practice
