Do you have an iPod capable of playing videos and want to watch your favorite movies? Most DVD-to-iPod ripper/converters aren’t free, and the trial versions only convert part of the movie, or add a watermark to it. This method is free and produces entire video files of flawless sound and video quality, without skipping or other defects. These directions come mostly from Videora’s conversion guide ( http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/guides.html), but in an effort to make this information available to more people, the steps are reproduced here.

Step 1

Download DVD Decrypter from doom9.org (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Rippers/SetupDVDDecrypter_3.5.4.0.exe) and Videora iPod Converter from videora.com (http://pspvideo9.intarnut.com/VideoraiPodConverter_Install.exe).

Step 2

Insert a DVD. A box may come up with options for playing (or otherwise opening) the DVD. If “Open in DVD Decrypter” or something similar is on the list, select this and go to Step 5. If not, it doesn’t matter; you will just take another route. If some type of media player starts, close it.

Step 3

Open DVD Decrypter.

Step 4

In DVD Decrypter, ensure that the correct DVD drive is available under Source. Select your drive and make sure you’ve got the right DVD by checking the title in the lower section of the Source box. If this is not your first time converting DVDs for your iPod with DVD Decrypter, go to step 7.

Step 5

At the top, click Mode > IFO I. This will change the screen layout, adding the Input and Stream Processing windows. After setting to IFO this time, DVD Decrypter will remain in this mode each time you open it.

Step 6

At the top, click Tools >Settings…, then near the top, click IFO Mode. Under Options, set File Splitting to None, and click OK. DVD Decrypter will also remember this setting from now on.

Step 7

Choose a destination for your file. It will be the whole DVD, full size, so make sure you have room for this extremely large file.

Step 8

Under Input, select the part of the DVD you want to decrypt. If it is a movie or TV program, choose the file with the longest running time. (Optional: choose specific chapters to copy in the lower left box under Input.)

Step 9

Click the DVD icon at the bottom to start decrypting. This can take 10 to 20 minutes for a movie-size file. When you hear a triumphant ditty signaling at the end of the decryption, close the program.

Step 10

Open Videora iPod Converter.

Step 11

In the side panel, click Convert.

Step 12

Under Transcoding Queue, click Transcode New Video and choose the file you just made using DVD Decrypter.

Step 13

Under New Trandcoding Job, type in a title for your movie.

Step 14

You may choose to select a specific output folder under Setup in the side panel, or you can keep the default C:\Program Files\VideoraiPodConverter\Videos. Everything else under Setup is already preset for iPod.

Step 15

Go back to Convert and click Start to make the mp4 file. Assume it will take about the length of the video to convert it (a two hour movie will take about two hours to convert, etc.). Start playing some solitaire and wait.

Step 16

When the file is completed, close iPod Converter and open the video file in iTunes. Plug in your iPod and synch it to iTunes and, voila, video.

Step 17

Delete the file you made using DVD Decrypter.

Tips

  • A finished 2-hour movie will be about 800 MB.
  • If you don’t want to sit by your computer for hours waiting for the file to convert, check “Shutdown PC upon completion” under Transcoding Queue and walk away.
  • One handy feature of the iPod Converter is that when you minimize it, the program goes to the taskbar with a little iPod icon. When you mouse over it, the percentage of the converted file appears. Just one more way to not wait for the file to finish. If you want to maximize the program again, click the icon.

Warnings

  • Convert copyrighted videos only for personal use and only from DVDs you own. Be aware that any other converting is most likely illegal. The use of Videora to exchange movies may also be illegal.
  • Don’t run too many programs while Videora iPod Converter is operating. Your computer is working hard enough as it is.
  • Be careful whenever downloading anything, as you may download something that could harm your computer, etc.

  • Videora iPod Converter
