Clapping our hands

Step 1

Being excited at the possibility of seeing or meeting someone that you have not seen in a very long time, might cause you to clap quickly and unevenly hitting one hand against the other. At the same time, you might jump up and down in a gleeful and happy way.

Step 2

Attend a concert, or sit in an a conference. You might have to clap many times, at many instances , so to clap too hard or loudly will cause your hands to become red and start hurting. This is the time that you might use your two fingers of one hand, against the palm of the other hand. This would cause a light tap, a more quiet tap, but watching from the front of the stage, it is indeed a clap of appreciation.

Step 3

Clap palms against each other only, with the fingers held up towards the sky. Slap the palm of one hand onto the other, clapping the right hand to the left, and then immediately reverse it, keeping a back and forth smooth movement with each clap in a back and forth motion.

Step 4

Clap at a social event, in a very demure manner, by just clapping with the first two fingers. Lightly and quickly hit two fingers against each other in a rhythm set by you, and is usually slowly and starts as others clap and stops when other clapping ceases.

Step 5

Be pleased when you win a race, and clap your hands together, and it might only be one or two claps, to show how happy you are to win.

Step 6

Attend a rock concert, or a ball game, and stand and clap when you feel excited or happy. Clap one hand against the other, in a loud, and forceful and quickly, to show your enthusiasm so that others can hear it as well.

Step 7

Be pleased when your child first learns to use the bathroom. Smile, laugh, be overjoyed, and clap so that your child will also clap their hands because they are pleasing you. They can understand this pleasure, by the way you look and sound as you clap.

Step 8

Meet an old friend that you have not seen in a very long time. Use one hand and clap on his shoulder, a few times, in rapid succession. Use this same shoulder clap, when a child comes home with a good report card. A shoulder clap is a way of showing approval.

Tips

  • There are as many ways to clap, as there are as many reasons to clap. There is no wrong way to clap, and it usually occurs in a very natural and unplanned way.
  • Clapping usually reveals happiness, enjoyment, and contentment, and everyone, even a person who cannot see, hear or speak can understand this action.

Warnings

  • Although clapping is a sign of happiness or in excitement, you don't clap for yourself when being praised or awarded. It shows rudeness and disrespect, like saying "I know I'm great, praise me."
  • Instead of clapping, the proper response to public praise (in western cultures) is a slight, modest bow or a raised hand acknowledging others applauds.
