Always choose wisely, the tattoo is not easily removed, and can be a more painful process.

Step 1

Search on line and in your yellow pages for a shop that looks clean and check portfolios so you can see the artists work. When you find an artist that does the kind of work you like, visit the shop or call to speak to the artist.

Step 2

Be comfortable with the artist that is going to tattoo you. It's very important that you find an artist that is interested in doing your tattoo and not just out for your money,

Step 3

You should always find an artist that is willing to work with you especially if you need something drawn up.

Step 4

Don't be talked into something you don't want, but be open for suggestion from the artist,

Step 5

The most important thing is to be comfortable in the shop and with the artist.

Tips

  • Don't try to be a cheapskate when it comes to getting a tattoo; it will last a lifetime.
    • Especially if you find and choose a good artist to do the work.
  • Most artists that love their work, and will work with you if you on a budget.
  • Don't rush the artist. Always give yourself plenty of time to get the work done.
  • Always check the position and placement of the tattoo before you start, the artist should have no problem changing it until you are happy with the placement.
  • After the work is done, have a close look at it to see if you are satisfied with the work if you want to add more.
  • Always pay attention to the aftercare instructions. It's very important to how your tattoo will look when healed.

Warnings

  • Do not just walk into the first shop you see and pick something off the wall.
  • If the artist seems drunk, high or distracted, do not get tattooed by him.
  • If the shop seems seedy and shady, it usually is.
  • Do not be talked into something you do not want.
