Have you always wanted to know how to take proper care of a Whites Tree frog? If so, please continue reading for what you need, steps, and lots of photos!

Step 1

Purchase a Whites Tree frog. The pricing of a White's will vary. In general, the price ranges from $10 to $40 (US).

Step 2

Get a housing setup ready. Adult Whites Tree frogs need at least a 30 gallon for 2 frogs. Also make sure the humidity is right. The daytime temp at the basking spot just below the light should be 80 - 82 degrees and the temp gradient should then decrease to 78 - 80 degrees on the opposite end of the tank. The nighttime temps should be 70 - 74 degrees. Higher end of the range for summer, lower end for winter.

Step 3

Place background on 3 sides of the enclosure. For this, you can use the aquarium backgrounds available at pet stores or something as simple as construction paper. You also need several hiding spots.

Step 4

For Bedding, you need to buy coconut-husk, ecoearth, or bed-a-beast. Don't use gravel, it can be fatal if swallowed.

Tips

  • The White's (or Dumpy) Tree frog is native to Australia and southern New Guinea. It can be found both in the northern and eastern parts of Australia (Badger 1995). More specifically from the coast to the drier interior of north western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland, SA, and NSW (Cogger 1983).
  • Reportedly this species is still common in parts of its natural range.
  • White's are a great frog around people!! They generally show very little fear of humans, and don't seem to mind being handled. Humidity gauges should also be used to ensure levels are appropriate for each species. Lower levels can be easily maintained by keeping conditions in the tank dry and by having a fully open screen lid. Higher levels can be easily maintained by misting the tanks, keeping the substrate damp, or covering the middle 2/3 of the screen lid with plastic if needed.
  • The walls of the tank should be sprayed with warm, treated water and wiped down once weekly.
  • The average life span for a White's tree frog in captivity is 10+ years. The longest living captive White's is 21 years old.
  • They will reach an average size of 4 inches with a range of 3&1/2 to 5 inches in length, snout to vent

  • The White's tree frog's scientific name is Litoria Caerulea. Frogs from the genus Litoria are members of the Pelodryadinae, a subfamily of a large family of tree frogs called the Hylidae. The name "White's tree frog" refers to the name of the man who first described the species. They are also known as a variety of common names such as Dumpy tree frog, Smiling tree frog, Australian Green tree frog of Indonesian dumpy tree frog.
