CoD4 is an extremely customizable game. New players may feel overwhelmed at first. Ill go over some tricks and techniques so you can get to the fun part of CoD.

Step 1

Setting up a Config for Call of Duty

Max fps and fov are both key commands. High fps makes the game run smoother. Fov makes it so you can see wider.

Call of Duty Guns

CoD4 has lots of good guns, but some are better than others.
MP5 Really good for fast action and lots of damage.
M4 Easy to use assault rifle thats fully automatic.
M40A3 is way better than the R700 to snipe. It has one more bullet per magazine, it's more accurate and its dammages are higher if you use it with an ACOG Scope. This is also the best sniper to no-scope with.
The desert eagle is accurate with high damaging rounds.
The Ak47 is a hard weapon to master, but is very rewarding in frags if you master it.
The m16 is extremely accurate, and when coupled with stopping power, will kill anything if all three bullets hit.

A very important thing to remember is using a tactic that fits both your equipment and the current situation of the map. If the enemy is camping mayor time, youre better off with a more stealthy outfit. If the enemy is moving agressively, youre better of with a sniperrifle.

Step 6

So:

When a point is guarded very well by the enemy, take the back route. This applies to all slightly tactical games.
Grenades and flashbangs help really well against dug in enemies.
Check the radar once in a while. It shows enemy mvement, but it should be regarded as an approximation.
Snipers often claymore their hideout, be aware.
When an enemy is up close, dont use the ironsight, don't use all of your ammo, but use a good amount to kill the enemy.
Doubletap and stopping power both multiply their respective atrribute by 1.4. This means that a gun shooting an already powerful round, will benefit more from double tap, and that a fast gun benefits more from stopping power.
When camping a building, use the element of suprise to your benefit. Dont stay in the same spot.
Dodging enemy sniperfire is done easily by sprinting, jumping, duck then sprinting further. Do it when youre at about 75% of the total path. It helps not getting shot in the chest, wich would result in your death.
Unless an enemy is up close, shoot in bursts of 3-4 shots.
Know what youre doing. The better the players, the more a game gets chess-like properties. That means you have to plan moves ahead, and keep their possible moves in mind. (example: youre lying prone, camping a doorway. Someone can easily throw in a nade and youre dead. You'd better find another spot.)
Try keeping your Kill Death Ratio above 1, it will help you finding a productive playstyle, keeping balace between playing defensive and offensive.

Call of Duty Game Types

CoD4 has 6 game types, choose the right one for you. Some people like the fast fragging action on death match or team death match. While others like the tactical game play of Search and Destroy in Hardcore mode.
Each game type offers a unique way to approach the game. Some are better for sniping while others are better for assault rifles and sub machine guns. *Beginners should play tdm or dm untill they become familiar with how the game works.

Tips

Grenades are one of the best weapons in CoD; use them before you die.
Learn to COOK grenades
Be aggressive, keep moving so the enemy never knows where to expect you.
Drawing a pistol is faster than drawing a gun, so its a tactical consideration to keep or switch your pistol for another weapon.
Rely on your mini map it can help you maneuver around the enemy and get flank kills
Don't overuse sprint it leaves you wide open to attack. When your rounding a corner SLOW DOWN. Often times your opponent will be running around the corner. If you're not then they will have to raise their gun while your pulling the trigger instead.
Learn the map before you play it online, there are lots of good spots in each level
Flashes and stuns bounce off walls, use this in your profit.
Leaning around corners is very handy when checking out a dangerous area, leaning around corners is also a very good form of covering yourself.
Remember if you stay in one position the enemy will keep on coming after you till you die so if i were you moving is one of the best tactics in the game it will keep you alive more than usual.
Note that having the enemy know your position can be a double-edged sword. Sure you can expect the pineapples to come flying, but you can also reposition yourself to confuse your enemies and make them come to you giving you a plethora of kills. This is especially efficient on hardcore with a silencer and UAV jammer.
Martyrdom grenades have a short fuse and can be picked up and THROWN at the enemy team. Ever thrown a marty grenade and earned a triple kill? The reaction is priceless.
When someone shoots on the radar without a silencer he will be spotted so beware of your shots and spot enemies on the radar it is really useful.
Learn the hierarchy of weapon range. SMG's and shotguns dominate everything at short range, Assault rifles for medium range, and sniper rifle's for long range. (Keep in mind some players can use most guns with a red dot as a sniper!)
If you notice the enemy team frequenting an area, pitch a tent and make smores. If they can't learn from their mistakes they deserve to be killed over and over again
Every map has "Hot spot" camping positions. Learn these and periodically fill them with lead. (While this is an easy way to get kills it will also occasionally get you banned from PC servers which accuse you of wallhacking)
When playing Search and Destroy make an offensive and defensive class. For your offense class put on the bomb squad perk, and for defense use claymores/C4.
Don't have a silencer and want to stay quiet? Use a knife!
There are two perks in the game you can have without taking up a perk. For martyrdom just throw a grenade if you know your about to die. And you are equally quiet using the dead silence perk if you crouch-walk.
