The first step in building a shed is to evaluate your storage needs to decide how big a shed to build. Also, as the building of sheds is regulated by the county government, you will need a permit and knowledge of the rules about where you are allowed to site the shed. You might also consider purchasing a plan of the type of shed that you want to build to save yourself time. From step 5 of the building, you will need a helper to work with.

Step 1

Set the four concrete blocks in the four corners of the shed site. Level the blocks.

Step 2

Frame the floor by setting the 2x6 treated lumber on top of the blocks.

Step 3

Nail the frame together.

Step 4

Nail the ¾ inch plywood to the frame.

Step 5

Frame 4 6-foot high sections of wall with the 2x4s. (Caution: Door and window openings should be incorporated in the appropriate walls.)

Step 6

Erect the walls one by one on the floor.

Step 7

Frame the roof by building six trusses.

Step 8

Attach the trusses to the walls, starting with the outside ones and working toward the center of the shed.

Step 9

Nail the ship lapped boards to the wall frame and the ½ plywood to the roof frame.

Step 10

Cover the roof with shingles.

Step 11

Build and hang door.

Step 12

Install a salvaged window in the wall opening.

Step 13

Remove nails.

Step 14

Scrap lumber and other debris from site.

Tips

    • Special detail for solo builders from step 5
  • Attach temporary legs to the side of the walls when erecting them.
  • To erect the trusses on the walls attach a temporary 8 feet long 2 x 4.

Warnings

  • Wear gloves and goggles.
  • Wear appropriate work shoes.
  • Be very careful when using electrical cutting tools.
