Upgrade Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) to 10.04 (Lucid Lynx)

In my previous post, I wrote showed you how to install Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) on your PC. This time we'll be doing an upgrade from that to Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx).

Note: You'll need a Wi-Fi connection for this.

Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS (long term support) is available for download here.

Step 1

Open System > Administration > Update Manager.

Step 2

On the Update Manager Window, there's an option called "New Ubuntu release '10.04 LTS' is available". Click the Upgrade button.

Step 3

Then it will ask "Do you want to start the upgrade?"—click the Start Upgrade button.

Step 4

When the "Configuring grub-pc" window appears, select "Keep the local version currently installed", which is recommended for systems with Nvdia dedicated graphics.

Step 5

Remove obsolete packages? I'd recommend keeping them.

Step 6

Boot using your old GRUB kernel if the latest one fails (I still use the old one).

Tip

  • You can remove boot kernels through Synaptic Package Manager.
  • There's a program called GRUB Customizer. Just install it to modify your boot settings.
