An authentic Roman toga is quite large and you will really need help with it. The toga was too much for the average Roman, who wore a toga about as often as we would wear a tuxedo.

A toga can be any color, with a few exceptions. A white toga was the sign of a candidate for elected office. Purple stripes were worn only by senators and members of the equestian order.

Step 1

How To Put on an Authentic Roman Toga

A toga is properly worn over a tunic, so you should start by putting on your tunic.

Step 2

Fold the toga over across the middle. This makes a rather long, narrow bundle of fabric.

Step 3

Start by holding your left arm straight out to your side. Drape the left end of the toga over your arm so the end hangs down in front to about ankle height. (Watch to about 0:35 in the video.)

Step 4

Drape the toga around the back and under your right arm. The toga should be a little higher than waist height in the back. (Watch to about 0:45 in the video.)

Step 5

Continue around the front, draping across the left shoulder and arm. Make sure the toga hangs nicely across the chest. (Watch to about 1:22 in the video.)

Step 6

The weight of the toga hanging off the left shoulder to the rear keeps the toga in place.

Step 7

Your helper should spend a lot of time adjusting the folds until the toga "looks right".
