The TARDIS is a time machine and spacecraft in the British science fiction TV show, Doctor Who. The name is an acronym of Time And Relative Dimension (or Dimensions) In Space. If you would like to to build a TARDIS replica, follow these simple steps and you'll be well on your way. The TARDIS can be of any size. So the length of the wood will depend on the size you wish to make it. The directions will only guide you, as the final size is up to you.

Step 1

How To Build a TARDIS Replica

Examine pictures of the fictional TARDIS that was designed to resemble a British Police Box. The original TARDIS had the ability to transform its appearance to blend in with any time period, but the Chameleon circuit malfunctioned when traveling to England in the 1960s. It was then perpetually stuck to appear as a British Police Box. (Picture is of a modern box, made of wood, outside Earls Court Tube Station, London)

Step 2

Take the four bigger pieces of wood and nail them together into the shape of a box, similar to a cubicle in the picture.

Step 3

Place the square pieces of wood on the top and the bottom so you can form a long box.

Step 4

Saw the front piece of wood in half. Add hinges for the doors. Add the thin strips of wood on the top and on the bottom of each door to make sure that it stands solid on the ground. Make sure that you do not close up the doors or you will never be able to open them.

Step 5

Pile the wood on top, each piece getting smaller than the next. Add the lantern onto the smallest piece of wood.

Step 6

Cut four panels out on each door, the one at the top the widest, and get some more wood that are roughly the same size as the doors. Go inside your TARDIS and stick the panels on the back of the doors. When you reach the opening and closing doors, nail it on normally, but afterward get a saw and find where the other cut is for opening, and cut down there.

Step 7

Paint your TARDIS blue. You can refer to the picture above for a rough idea of the color of the TARDIS.

Step 8

Add the final accessories.

  1. Get some white glass with three blue sections, like the windows on the TARDIS itself, and stick them on the wood. With the wood on the back, you can't see in it, like the real TARDIS, but if it's just brown, put some more white glass on the back. Now you can get all the panels and door knobs on.
  2. Get a piece of thin black plastic and white letters. Glue the words POLICE BOX on, leaving a space in the middle for the other letters. Now get some smaller letters and in the middle where you left a space, add: PUBLIC CALL
  3. How To Build a TARDIS Replica Add the "Police Telephone" door panel to your TARDIS.You can make one yourself, using the bits that sawed out earlier, or purchase a model online. This will be used for the thin panel on the top on every door. Stick it on the second panel down on the left door.
  4. Nail the gold door handle to on the opposite side of the 'For use of the public only' panel.
  5. Underneath, nail on a gold YALE lock, and go back inside the TARDIS. On the bit where it says 'For use of the public only' cut off that bit and super-glue them together. Go to the side of the TARDIS and add hinges and a gold lock. Now you have your finished your TARDIS!

Things You'll Need

  • 4 pieces of long wood
  • 4 small pieces of wood, just a bit wider on the top than the other bits of wood
  • 1 slightly smaller piece of wood
  • 2 square pecies of wood, able to fit on the top and the bottom
  • 4 thin pieces of wood for the bottom
  • a small piece of wood to hold the lantern.
  • a lantern, preferably with a blue top
  • door hinges
  • nails
  • a claw hammer
  • a saw
  • blue paint
  • gold YALE lock
  • optional: model "Police Telephone" door panel
