How to diagnose craniosynostosis Synostosis, also called craniosynostosis, is the premature joining of the plates which make up a baby's skull. The abnormal shaped skull that results is due to the brain not being able to grow in its natural shape. Treatment is usually surgery during infancy to separate fused skull plates.
