I'm actually going to be at my house in Redding unless it looks like there are going to be clouds towards the western mountains...if there is then I'm going to head east a bit towards Lassen. Anywh...more

I also love how deformable they are...you can make them flat or very sharply saddle shaped.

Cory Poole commented on How To Fold a Unique Paper Sculpture 23 hours ago

Ah, a hypar. These are cool. They are sections of a hyperbolic paraboloid (thus the name). You can actually use them to form polyhedral like objects. Check out Eric Demain's site on the hypar (he c...more

Your round trip would be about 1000 miles so "only" about 200 dollars. I'd do it...but then again I'm flying to Hawaii to be able to see the entire transit of venus instead of just the first part. ...more

Cory Poole replied to Justin Meyers's comment on Red Ring of Fire! Here's How to Watch Sunday's Annular Solar Eclipse and Not Get Blinded yesterday

I'm already telling my bosses that I'm going to take a couple of days off in August 2017. :)

Cory Poole replied to JT Newsome's comment on Red Ring of Fire! Here's How to Watch Sunday's Annular Solar Eclipse and Not Get Blinded yesterday

If you go to http://shadowandsubstance.com/ you can see animations for various states of the eclipse, whether it's partial or annular.

Cory Poole commented on Sun Picture from My New Solar Telescope 3 days ago

I've replaced the image I originally posted up with a better processed image. Processing these has a pretty steep learning curve

Cory Poole posted to the corkboard to the Astronomy World Corkboard, about Sun Picture from My New Solar Telescope 5 days ago

There is going to be an annular solar eclipse on May 20th that will be visible in a narrow pathway that covers part of Eastern Asia and the Western United States. The eclipse will be seen as a part...more

Nice clean images.

Cory Poole posted to the corkboard to the Astronomy World Corkboard, about Supermoon Pictures from Last Night 1 week ago

Last night was the so called "Supermoon," where the moon was at perigee, which is the closest orbital point to the Earth while the moon was in full phase. This makes the moon appear larger by up to...more

Cory Poole replied to Justin Meyers's comment on Lyrid Meteors Time Lapse Video and Still Pictures 1 week ago

Thanks! I borrowed my brother and cousins cameras but I have quick access to them. I'm going to try and shoot the "super moon" tonight with my 950mm telescope and two 2x tele-extenders giving my a ...more

The peak of the Lyrid meteor shower of 2012 was the night of Saturday, April 21, and I went to Whiskeytown Lake near Redding, California and took about 1,000 pictures. I used 3 Panasonic GH2s with ...more

Cory Poole replied to Bob Swaim's comment on You Won't Believe They Roll: How to Build Half Circle and Elliptical Wobblers 2 weeks ago

If there was no cut the distance between the centers would be twice the radius. You have to subtract twice the cut length from that. So you end up needing to solve the equation 2R-2C=sqrt(2)*R. If ...more

Cory Poole replied to Justin Meyers's comment on Images of the Moon, Saturn, and Venus from My New Telescope 3 weeks ago

That's sorta true. Basically you probably also should take into account the resolution of the camera's sensor. The Mark III is something like 22MP I think whereas my camera is only 16MP. So can dig...more

Cory Poole replied to Bryan Crow's comment on Images of the Moon, Saturn, and Venus from My New Telescope 4 weeks ago

Thanks. The Cannon 5D Mark III would give cleaner pictures for sure but since it's a full frame sensor as opposed to my camera which has a sensor that's one quarter the area, that setup would actua...more

Cory Poole replied to Mark Piper's comment on How to Make the Platonic Solids Out of Playing Cards last month

You are right for sure...but I don't really know the answer. The angles should all be the same...so perhaps you could do some test cuts and then set the angle. I've always calculated all the angles...more

Cory Poole replied to Mark Piper's comment on How to Make the Platonic Solids Out of Playing Cards last month

wow. That will be pretty awesome! I'd just like to point out that it is the angles that matter with these slide togethers and that the slits should go half way to the other edge.

Cory Poole commented on Important Astronomers: Galileo Galilei 2 months ago

Cool idea for a series. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest. About Galileo, I think he was also the first to observe sunspots and looking at the sun actually caused him to go blind.

Cory Poole posted to the corkboard to the Astronomy World Corkboard, about Photos of Mercury and the crescent Moon 2 months ago
